Would you like to be a to make a difference to a cause you feel passionate about?
A trusteeship is one of the most important roles in the voluntary sector. A trustee may also be known as board members, directors or committee members.
The benefits of becoming a trustee can be very rewarding. You get to utilise your skills and experience to benefit a cause or charity you care about. You get to learn about the management and strategic side of the charity by taking on a leadership role. You also get to work alongside new and interesting people from a diverse background which ultimately places you at the heart of the organisation you choose to be involved in. Essentially the more effective the board of trustees the greater difference you and your organisation will make for the greater good of the cause or charity you are committed to.
So who can become a trustee?
The Charity Commission provides guidance on who can be a trustee but as long as you over 18 years old and not have being previously disqualified from a directorship you are eligible. You must be willing to complete legal and security checks and be able to provide references.
What skills do I need to be a trustee?
Trustees are not expected to be experts or have specific skill sets, as the boards are made up of varied positions and the skills will vary in demand and need. You may come from a professional background and possess good business skills or you may possess “soft skills” like being great at facilitating, team work or problem solving. You may also have service user skills, social or family experience, general interests or commitment to goals of the organisation.
How much time do I need?
Usually you will need to attend a minimum of 4 meetings a year so it makes it a perfect role for busy people. Day to day management of the organisations is undertaken by the staff and other volunteers. Trustees are also volunteers so any time you offer is suited around your lifestyle. Appropriate out of pocket expenses are normally reimbursed.
