How NAF Health has adapted during the pandemic
Fola Afelumo, Director / Project Leader of NAF Health said “When Covid-19 pandemic lockdown started last year, we quickly adapted our weight management programmes – nutrition exercise and cooking classes to to an online programme – virtually via Zoom.
“Our project from the first Covid-19 lockdown themed ‘Weight loss management programme – Covid Lockdown Fightback’ focused on the Black Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME) group.
“We were engaging with the BAME community with online Nutrition Advice, Physical Activities( Zumba and aerobic activities) and Cooking classes via Zoom for weight management and healthier lifestyle.
“This project was highly needed especially during this period as the Covid-19 virus was showing higher susceptibility and risk of fatality rate with BAME group due to prevalent underlying health conditions such as Obesity, High Blood Pressure and Type 2 Diabetes that had been statistically proven to be higher within these communities .
“The project has been very successful as all participants lost weight and continue to do so.
“What is more, participants find a place within their group throughout the pandemic lockdowns where they can socially interact with other participants virtually outside their own home.
“We were also communicating with all participants one on one by telephone and WhatsApp groups during our weekly monitoring interactive sessions. These have helped participants physically, socially and mentally throughout the Lockdown.
“This avenue create an environment where participants were able to meet up and communicate with other participants from outside their homes – a bonus to their ability to learn about nutrition, how to cook healthy meals on low cost budget and lose weight creating a sense of community engagement.
“A big thank you to VSDF, Lottery Community Fund and Active Essex that has supported us with these projects.”
