Finding Forever Homes for Gentle Giants
Based in Stanford-le-Hope and operating out of kennels in Wickford, Romford Retired Greyhounds is on a heartwarming mission: to find loving, forever homes for ex-racing greyhounds across South Essex—including many right here in Thurrock.
But their work goes beyond rehoming. Known for their compassion and inclusivity, they’re especially dedicated to helping individuals who may be overlooked by other organisations — from elderly people seeking companionship to those with wellbeing challenges who would benefit from a loyal, calm canine friend.
Despite their athletic past, greyhounds are famously laid-back — often called “40 mph couch potatoes”! That makes them ideal for a wide range of homes and lifestyles.
The group currently runs mainly on a small core of 10 passionate volunteers — and they’re looking for more people to join their pack. Whether you’re helping at weekend dog walks (Sundays, 9am–12pm in Wickford), attending events to promote rehoming, or simply sharing the love online — there’s a role for everyone. And no, you don’t need to own a greyhound to get involved!
Their volunteers come from all walks of life, from full-time workers to retirees, united by their love for these gentle dogs and their drive to give them the second chance they deserve.
If you’re looking for a meaningful, feel-good way to support your local community, Romford Retired Greyhounds would love to hear from you.
