| We caught up with Paul Hounsell from Purfleet Heritage and Military Centre to find out how the event went. Paul said “Sunday 18th of August is one of those days that will be remembered by not only the local Gurkha community and the team at Purfleet Heritage and Military Centre, but by all those who attended and the Gurkha Regiment in general. |
| “After years of planning and hard work a memorial to commemorate the valor and courage of the Gurkha’s long association with the British Army was finally unveiled at the Purfleet Heritage and Military Centre. The granite base is inscribed with the names of Gurkha Victoria Cross recipients and the campaigns in which the Gurkhas were involved. The top has been cast from a mixture of metals in Nepal and portrays the iconic crossed Kukri knives and the Terai Hat which has been a symbol of the Gurkhas since the mid 19th century. “The day was a mixture of emotional Remembrance and colourful regional dance. The memorial itself is the first of its kind in Essex and is a fitting tribute to the hard work of all those involved. “Purfleet Heritage and Military Centre has enjoyed a long and happy relationship with the local Gurkha community and is home to a collection of Gurkha memorabilia. It also holds annual Gurka Remembrance and family day events, 2025 dates to be confirmed, which are open to all members of the public.” A big well done to all involved in this great event! |
